Downlights and lighting design.

Lighting planned as a scheme rather than a row of holes in the ceiling. Circuits, zones and dimming worked out before anything is cut.

Who this is for. Anyone renovating, extending, or living with a room that has one pendant in the middle of the ceiling doing all the work.

Most bad lighting is a planning problem

A grid of downlights spaced evenly across a ceiling lights the floor and nothing else. Good lighting has layers: general light, task light where you actually work, and accent light on the things worth looking at.

We plan the positions against how the room is used and how the furniture sits, split it across circuits so you can have one room behave several ways, and specify dimming that actually works with the fittings rather than buzzing at 40 percent.

The details that get missed

  • Colour temperature kept consistent, so one room is not warm and the next one blue
  • Fire rated downlights where they penetrate a ceiling that needs it
  • Dimmable drivers matched to the dimmer, which is where most flicker comes from
  • Switching planned at the doors people actually use

How it works

  1. We look at the room and how you use it

Furniture, worktops, the things worth lighting.

  2. A plan on paper

Positions, circuits, switching and dimming agreed before a hole is cut.

  3. First fix and install

Cable routes planned around joists and voids rather than through them.

  4. Set up and tested

Dimming levels set with you, then certified.

Questions we get asked

Can you do this without a full rewire?

Usually yes. Lighting circuits can often be reworked on their own, particularly with accessible loft space or suspended floors above.

Will the downlights flicker?

Not if the driver and the dimmer are matched, which is where nearly all flicker comes from. We specify them together.

Do you supply the fittings?

We can, or you can. If you are buying your own, send us the spec before you order and we will tell you whether it will do what you want.

How many downlights do I need?

Fewer than most people are sold. A well planned room uses layers rather than quantity.
